Amazing Inside Takeaway Fix For Better Golf

Today I’m going to be helping you with your takeaway, specifically for those of you who are whipping that golf club on the inside.

 Why is this a problem?
This is usually a precursor for coming over the top and hitting some big slice shots.

 The solution
Here’s a simple drill to iron out this bad habit:

This drill only works as far as the halfway back position in the swing.

  1.  Using an alignment stick, place it underneath your lead armpit so it pokes out a few inches. Hold out the golf club in front of you so the alignment stick sits on the front side of the grip, slightly above the lead arm.
  2. Grip the golf club and place it down and behind the ball. You’ll feel some flex of the rod underneath the lead arm and on the front side of the grip.
  3. As you take the golf club back parallel with the ground, if the club drifts on the inside and moves behind your body, the pressure will cause the stick to release and fall to the ground.

This provides you with some feedback that the club has moved too far in and around your body.

 Summary:
This drill is a great way of rectifying a common error that many golfers make: whipping the club head inside on the takeaway.

Place an alignment stick under your lead armpit. Hold the club out in front of you so the stick sits on the front side of the grip. As you take the club back, the stick will remain in position as long as the club stays in line with your shoulders. If you suck the club inside your body, the stick will release and fall onto the ground, indicating that the club has drifted behind your body.
