Ball Striking MASTERCLASS 1: The Low Point

Let’s talk about how the golf club needs to work as it comes in to impact.

First of all, let us establish what a good-quality impact actually is: whenever the ball is on the ground, a solid impact would mean when the golf club is approaching the ball, it strikes the ball on a slight descending angle of attack. Then, it would have what’s called a low point, or the bottom of the golf swing after the golf ball. That’s where you see the best players in the world take a divot after they strike the shot.

Here is a simple drill and exercises to really work through this pattern and develop a better motion:

  1. Place a little yellow alignment stick down on the ground, right in the center of your stance.
  2. Then, make three little practice swings in a row, while looking for an audible feedback and the brushing of the grass on the front side.
  3. After you’ve done that, place a ball at the end of the stick. Set up how you would for a normal golf shot but focus on brushing the front side off that line.
  4. So once again, place the yellow stick in the centre of the stance and recreate that same motion.
  5. From there, once you put the ball in position, work towards recreating the same feeling.

If that doesn’t work out well, that would mean that the bottom of the swing was too far behind you either hit the mat or the grass well the club rose up and you hit the equator of the golf ball.

This is essentially the number one skill to develop at the beginning of this ball striking masterclass.

To improve your ability to get that Golf Club striking the grass in the same point, I want you to:

  1. Practice at home with a setup to this practice (see video below) as much as you can, brushing the front side of that loan until you get comfortable and confident doing it.
  2. Place a ball at the end of that yellow line and work to recreate that same feeling
  3. If you are really struggling to make that solid impact one of the easy things to do is think about where the position of your body is. For example, if you’re constantly brushing back and behind that line and you’re really struggling to get it going forward, focus on where your shirt buttons and belt buckle are. If you have your shirt buttons and my belt buckle too far back be it either starting too far back or it’s drifting too far back throughout the golf swing well that’s only going to encourage me to strike that ground behind the yellow line.
  4. From here, just place a little bit more weight or pressure on your front foot the way that you’re going to do that is by shifting your sure buttons and your pelvis or your belt buckle a little bit more towards the target so it places maybe about 60 or 70 percent of your weight on the front foot by doing
  5. so it’s going to make it a lot easier to brush that front side of the line and it’s really going to improve the quality of your consistency in doing
