Get More Distance With These Simple Keys
Mar 20, 2022
In this article, we’re going to address the three keys that you need in your golf swing to get more power, more distance, and hit the ball further.
One of the most common requests I get from players is: “I want to get more distance.”
I’m going to show you the three main keys that can really help you improve the speed of your golf swing and therefore the distance that you can hit it.
- First, you need to look for is a tension-free golf swing. Essentially, focus on having a level of softness and mobility to your wrists. However, do not mistake this for a soft grip, it’s quite the contrary. You need a strong and tight grip on your golf club to hit a 95-mile per hour, for example. If you’re not sure about the placement of your fingers, go to my YouTube channel and look for a grip video to learn. A great little drill for you to do before you hit a shot is to do what you see a lot of high-level golfers do, which is a little bit of a back and forward up-and-down motion with the club. They also tend to do a little bit of pumping of their arms towards their body. The reasoning behind this is to release a lot of that excessive tension out of their body.
- Secondly, look for is a big turn, both back and through, the golf ball. A big turn looks like you’re setting up to the golf ball and you make a very swing while maintaining limited hip, shoulder, and chest rotation. If you were to put your golf club across your shoulders, what you would be looking for is about a 90-degree shoulder rotation.
- Thirdly, you need to learn how to shift your pressure. We get the majority of our speed in the golf swing from how much we push down into the ground. If you look at players like Rory McIlroy or Tiger Woods, they have a significant dip to their heads and as they do so, they’re getting to the top of their swing, and they’re applying a lot of pressure down into the ground. They are then able to release a lot of the energy back towards the golf ball at the moment of impact and that’s how they hit the ball a tremendous distance. A simple step drill to master is from the address position, you’re going to take a little bit of a narrow stance as you swing the golf club back. Take a little step back with your right foot, and as you get close to your lead arm, moving past towards the top of the swing, you’re going to redirect that step and step towards your front foot.
Try these exercises out and I’m sure you’ll pick up a few extra yards and it may be just what you need to improve your game going forward in the year.
