Golf: Power Vs Finesse
We all play a variety of different shots out on the course. However, all these swings can be categorized into two main areas: firstly the shots in which we play for power and secondly the shots in which we look for more finesse.
Let’s discuss the differences between the two to help you identify what shot you need to play in any situation to give yourself the greatest chance of success.
Starting with the power swings; these are characterized by a wide stance.
- For those, we want to structure our arms and the handle leaning forward.
- From here, we’re looking to create a big turn (lots of width). This is going to enable us to create a lot of speed to send the golf ball as far as we possibly can.
For more control and predictability over the trajectory landing and rollout of the golf ball,
- We’ve got to set up in such a way that we have a narrower stance and we’re a lot closer to the ball.
- From here, I like to see softer hands, elbows, and knees throughout the entirety of the motion.
- By doing so, it’s going to help us improve the quality and control over the bottom of the swing also using the bounce of the golf club.
Hence, as you can see, there’s a big difference in the way that we set up and execute a finesse shot and a power swing.
Use these tips to help you identify what shot you need to play and how to play it and I’m sure when you’re out there on course next time you’ll execute these shots to a higher degree.
