How To Get Out Of The Bunker Every Time

This article’s focus is the one part of the club that needs to move faster than anything else to guarantee success out of the bunkers. I will show you how to create enough power to be able to get that ball out on a more consistent basis.

One of the biggest errors that I see players make in the bunker is a lack of speed when hitting greenside bunker shots. This usually stems from poor set up positions that leads to anxiety over how much speed to create. Very often I’ll see players with poor setups stand too close and too tall.

An easy way to rectify that is through the following drill:

  1. Once you’re in the set up position (wide flex stance ball position, forward body positioned over to the left handside), you can slide your left hand down your leg so it sits on your kneecap.
  2. To ensure that the club head is creating the speed you need, you’d want the club head from the address position to travel a long way in the backswing, come down through the sand and travel a long way in the follow-through.
  3. Have some practice swings with a wide low flex stance. When you lean forward from this position, you should feel that the club head is working a long way up in the backswing.
  4. Ensure this with a lot of wrist hinge and a lot of arm fold. You can feel like this golf club is a short distance away from our body in the sand we don’t need a great deal of turn because we’re not necessarily going for a lot of power to send this ball a considerable distance we’re looking more for a focus speed down at the golf ball.
  5. As you get to the top of your backswing, you should see that you’ve had a lot of hinge. You’d almost be creating what’s called three sides to a square; your upper arm, forearm and club shaft create three sides to a square. This creates a lot of hinge in this position.

Try it out and see how it works club head back club head through that ball is going to pop out nice and soft. One key aspect of this is to ensure that you’re not decelerating into the shot. You need to feel that that club head is accelerating as you hit these shots. So keep practicing and check out the full video below.
