How to Keep Your Head Still in the Golf Swing?

A steady head is one of the critical factors a good striker of the ball must ensure throughout hitting the target. It should not move far away when taking the golf club away.

The Problem

An average recreational golfer who struggles with ball striking will have a lot of lateral movement. They will move away from the target in the backswing. It might look acceptable if they come back nicely and hit a reasonable shot.

But if you struggle with the ball strike and are into fat shots and thin shots because of irregular head movement, you need to practice the following guidelines to fix the problem.

The Drill

Although we are allowed a tilt of our neck to enable the body to sufficiently turn, it doesn’t need to be a lot of movement.

Pro-golfers keep their head steady as they backswing, move down into the golf ball, and finally lift as they follow through.

Follow this drill:

1. Firstly, make sure you know how far your head moves. A simple way is to look yourself in a mirror as you turn to the top, ensuring that your head is not moving too much.

Use a whiteboard marker, draw a circle on the mirror in front of you and make it is a reference for your head position where it sits in the address.

Try keeping it locked in the same spot as you lift the club and initiate the backswing. You need to make sure it doesn’t shift off.

Keep watching yourself as you do it because you want to keep it relatively in the same spot from the top of the backswing and coming down to the target.

It’s allowed to go up and down marginally, within a reasonable limit, but it shouldn’t drift too much.

2. You can also ask your friend to put their hand up against your head while you make a backswing, which will stop you from shifting.

3. You can also use a noodle and place it up against your head once to give you some reference.

4.If you are out in the sun, try putting your shadow over your back and watch your head as you make backswings and downswings and see that the head is staying relatively stable.

Summary

One of the biggest keys to becoming a better ball striker is to keep a relatively steady head in the backswing and not see it moving too far off the ball as we take that golf club away. You can watch yourself using different techniques I have mentioned above and see your shot getting perfect.
