Shift Your Pressure To Get More Distance

Today, we’re going to be talking about pressure shifts and how increasing the amount of pressure that you ship between your right foot and your left foot, throughout the golf swing, can give you longer, straighter shots.

The golf swing is an athletic, dynamic movement and not only do we need to move our body in such a way to create power and consistency, but we also need to shift our pressure i.e. the weight between our feet and the force we’re applying down into the ground.

The problem

Players who do not create much pressure shift do not create much speed. Therefore, it’s incredibly important that we understand this concept so we can generate as much power as possible.

So, how do we look to improve and maximise these pressure shifts and what do we need to do to encourage ourselves to be able to move a little bit more dynamically, a little bit more athletically, and create some more speed?

The solution

We want to transfer pressure from the lead foot, at the address, by shifting it to the trail heel as you begin to take the club back. This is going to free up your body to rotate all the way to the top of the swing before you then start shifting your pressure back down towards your front foot.

Here’s a simple drill to help you:

  1. Starting off in the address position, as you take the golf club back, shift your pressure onto your trail side.
  2. Place your right foot next to your left foot.
  3. Starting with the club a little bit forward, as you’re about to pull the club back, you’re going to step back with your trail heel and really feel a significant amount of pressure being applied down into that trail foot. This frees your body up to make a big turn to the top.
  4. The downswing is pretty much the same thing but the opposite. From the address position, put your left foot next to your right foot. Swing back, and even before you get to the top of your swing, when your lead arm is going past parallel, step forward and change direction. As you do that, your body is compressing, it’s getting a little bit lower and you’re applying a little bit more pressure. That’s going to help your body get into a position where you can really create some more power and speed.

Summary:

From the address position: start with the club a little bit forward, your right foot a little bit in. Step back with your trail heel, transferring pressure onto your right foot. As you begin to swing back, step forward with your left foot, replant it and change direction. You’ll start to feel a lot more whip and speed at the bottom of the swing.

This will take a little bit of timing to get used to but the more you do it you’ll find that your body will get into a natural flow. It will give you a great sensation of how to correctly shift your pressure throughout the golf swing and bring you some more power.
