Why You Must Tilt Your Shoulders In The Backswing

In this article, you will learn how the shoulders need to work in the golf swing in the backswing and the downswing. how they need to bend to ensure that you’re getting the most consistency out of your ball striking.

The movement of the upper body is incredibly important to understand and be able to control to get effective repeatable ball-striking to engulf the balls on the ground so we need to have a specific tilt or angle to our movement throughout the golf swing.

So what does that mean so today we’re going to be talking about the shoulders and how they need to work throughout the motion.

Try this simple drill:

  1. Starting from the address position, put a stick across your shoulders and make sure it’s matching a white stick down on the ground.
  2. From there, a backswing motion would mean that your shoulders would turn to a 90-degree angle.
  3. In this position, you should be able to hit the golf ball effectively, with a tilting motion, i.e. a side bend, where your left shoulder gets closer to your left hip.

One of the big faults and errors that I see with recreational golfers is that they don’t have any tilt to their shoulders as they make their backswing. This results in them making a rounded motion that causes some issues with the position in their arms and also the plane of their golf swing coming down.

A great way to practice these moves is to get it home get in front of a mirror, grab a stick and simply put it across your shoulder. Then, make some backswings and try to get a feel of your left shoulder working down in the golf swing.

I hope this quick snapshot of how the shoulders need to move throughout the motion helps you. If you’ve got any questions please ask below and I’ll be happy to help.
